Welling Food Tracker & AI Calorie Counter App: Frequently Asked Questions

Calorie Goals and Macro Targets

  • To customize your goal, navigate to Profile > Goal and Calorie Targets. Welling offers three primary calorie counting program settings:

    • Lose Weight: Includes a recommended calorie deficit for fat loss and weight loss.

    • Build Muscle: Provides a calorie surplus target and protein tracking goals for muscle growth.

    • Keep Fit: Sets a maintenance calories target to stay at your current weight.

All calorie and macro targets are fully adjustable to fit your specific needs.

  • Yes, you can set a custom calorie target in Profile > Goal and Calorie Target to match your weight loss, muscle gain, or maintenance goals.

    • Health Note: For safety, we generally recommend not dropping below 1,200 calories a day for females or 1,500 calories for males when using any calorie counting program.

    • Sustainable Progress: We do not recommend exceeding a 500-calorie daily deficit for long-term weight loss success.

  • You can adjust your macros in Profile > Diet and Macro Ratios. While choosing a specific Diet Preference provides a default Macro Ratio, you can manually fine-tune your protein, fat, and carb targets to match your personal preference — making Welling the best app to track macros for any diet type.

  • Simply tell Welling your current weight in the chat to log it instantly as part of your weight loss or muscle gain tracking.

    • To Edit: Tap on the specific log entry in your chat to update your weight data.

    • To Delete: Navigate to the Weight menu to view your history and remove entries.

  • We recommend weighing yourself every day. Body weight fluctuates due to water retention, exercise, and digestion, daily weight loss tracking allows you to see a more accurate weekly average and better understand your calorie deficit or calorie surplus progress.

    • Best Practice: Weigh yourself in the morning, after using the bathroom and before eating or drinking, for the most accurate calorie and macro tracking results.

  • You can set your dietary preferences in Profile > Allergies and Restrictions. This allows you to list specific allergies or food intolerances so your AI nutrition coach can tailor its calorie and nutrition tracking feedback to your personal dietary needs.

  • In Profile > Allergies and Restrictions, you can provide additional details for your AI nutrition coach to consider. This includes foods you dislike, specific dietary restrictions, or guidance from nutrition consultations and health test reports, ensuring your calorie and macro targets are fully personalized to your needs.

Calorie Tracking and Food Logging

  • Tap the camera icon next to the chat field to take a photo or select one from your album. You can set the meal time and add optional details in the caption. Welling's AI food tracker supports photo logging for both prepared meals and nutrition labels.

  • Tap the camera icon to snap a photo of your plate or a nutrition label. The AI food tracker analyzes the image and logs the estimated calories and macros instantly — no manual searching required.

  • To log hands-free, use the built-in dictation tool. Tap the microphone icon in the chatbox to turn on voice dictation, then speak your meal naturally. It will be automatically typed out and logged by your AI calorie tracker.

  • There are two ways to backdate your calorie tracking entries:

    1. In Chat: Mention the specific date while logging (e.g., "Yesterday I had...").

    2. Via Progress: Go to Progress > Calories, scroll to the specific date, and add food directly to the desired meal slot.

  • Estimations may vary for a few reasons:

    • Portioning: The AI food tracker may have estimated a different portion size or food type than intended.

    • Branded Foods: If a specific brand is not in the food database, Welling uses a similar food for the calorie estimation.

    • AI Limitations: AI models can occasionally make mistakes. We recommend double-checking entries if they look inaccurate. You can always tap the entry to manually adjust the portion, calories, and macros.

  • Tap into any food log entry to manually edit the portion, calorie, or macro values.

    • To Delete: Tap the Delete button inside the entry.

    • Past Entries: To adjust previous days, go to Progress > Calories, select the date, and tap the meal to edit.

  • Tap into the food log entry to select Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, or Snack. Welling also uses the time of day and food type to categorize your meals automatically within your calorie tracking log.

  • Switch the camera to Label Mode and take a clear photo of the nutrition label. Welling will log the standard serving size stated. You can add a caption if you consumed more or less than one serving.

    • Note: Ensure the photo is clear and focused only on the label for the best calorie tracking results.

  • Yes. Open the camera, enter Barcode Mode, and point it at the product code. This feature is currently optimized for foods found in the United States.

  • Navigate to the Progress view and scroll to the Water menu. Tap a circle to log a cup. You can customize your water target and units in Settings > Goals and Targets.

  • Currently, Welling does not support micronutrient tracking. We focus on making weight management simple by prioritizing calories and macro tracking, specifically protein tracking.

    • Feature Request: If tracking micronutrients is important to your goals, please email us at support@welling.ai so we can prioritize this in our development roadmap.

  • Yes. In addition to primary macros, Welling will estimate and track your daily dietary fiber intake automatically, included as part of our comprehensive macro tracking analysis.

  • Welling does not currently support fasting schedules. If you would like to see fasting or micronutrient tracking added, please email us at support@welling.ai to help us prioritize these features.

    1. Log it: First, log your recipe by typing the ingredients into the chat or taking a photo of the meal using the AI food tracker.

    2. Heart it: After logging, tap inside the food log entry and tap the heart icon.

    3. Name it: Give your custom recipe a name for easy searching in your calorie tracking log.

    4. Quick Log: Tap the heart icon next to the camera button to access your Favorites keyboard. You can log the recipe instantly and even adjust specific ingredients or portion sizes before saving.

  • You can add any frequently eaten food to your Favorites for faster calorie and macro tracking.

    • To Save: First, log the food via text or photo. Tap the entry, select the heart icon, and give it a name.

Tracking Activity and Calories Burned

  • Yes. You can seamlessly connect Welling with Apple Health to sync your daily steps, workout data, and weight automatically. To enable this, navigate to Settings > Apple Health to complete the setup and improve your calorie and macro tracking accuracy.

  • You can log activity in two ways using the AI chat:

    1. Activity and Duration: Tell Welling what you did and for how long (e.g., "I went for a 30-minute run"). Welling will estimate your burned calories and create an entry.

    2. Direct Calorie Entry: If you have tracked your workout on a separate device, you can tell Welling the specific calories burned directly (e.g., "I burned 400 calories in a spin class").

  • Yes. By default, Welling adds your active calories burned to your daily calorie target. If you prefer to stick to a fixed calorie goal regardless of exercise, you can disable this feature in Settings > Goals and Targets.

  • Welling calculates calorie expenditure based on your unique body data, the specific activity, and its duration. Because Welling looks at the full context of your profile, logging the same activity twice might yield slightly different calorie results.

    • Note: It is important to remember that most wearable activity trackers provide calorie estimates rather than exact metabolic data.

  • To manage your exercise logs, tap directly on the activity log entry to adjust the burned calories or tap the Delete button. You can also view and manage all historical calorie and activity data by navigating to Progress > Activity.

Viewing Your Calorie and Nutrition Progress

  • To analyze your calorie tracking trends over time, go to Progress > Calories and switch to the Week View by tapping the "W" in the top-right corner. Alternatively, tap on Progress > Average Deficit to see your weekly calorie deficit performance at a glance.

  • By default, any calories logged from activity are added to your total calorie budget for that day. You can adjust this setting by visiting Profile > Goal and Calorie Targets.

    • Expert Advice: Be mindful that many trackers overestimate calorie burn. If your primary goal is weight loss, we recommend not eating back these calories for low-to-moderate intensity activities to ensure you remain in a consistent calorie deficit.

  • Welling calculates your average calorie deficit by taking the total of your daily deficits from the current week and dividing by the number of active days. Only days where you have logged food or activity are included, ensuring your calorie tracking average is not skewed by empty data.

  • Yes. In the Macro section, you can see exactly which foods contributed most to your protein, carbs, or fats. This breakdown is available in both daily and weekly views, making it easy to identify your best and worst macro tracking contributors.

  • Currently, Welling does not support the import or export of nutrition data. We are always looking to improve our calorie counting program, so if this feature is important to you, please let us know at support@welling.ai.
